A Little Summary of Phonology

Helloooo, my lovely readers!!

We meet again in my blog :) In this time I would like to explain to you about "Phonology" and more detail about it. Let's check it outtt!!!

Definition of Phonology

Phonology is the study of how sounds are organized and used in natural languages. It is just one of several aspect of languages, it is also related to other aspects such as phonetic, morphology, syntax and pragmantics.

Key Terms of Phonology

There are so many key terms of phonology, some of theme are:

1. Phoneme
2. Phone
3. Allophone

  • Phoneme
Phoneme is the smallest contrastive linguistic unit which may bring about a change of meaning. For example 'mat' and 'bat'. Phonemes are based on spoken language and recorded by IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet). They are written beetween slashes..e.g. /p
  •          Phone
Phone is a unit of speech sound. It may refer to any speech sound or gesture without regard of its place in phonology of a language. A phoneme is a set of phones or a set of sound features that are thought of as the same element within the phonology of a particular language.
  •       Allophones
Allophones are variations of phonemes. So, they are set of possible spoken sounds used to prounounce one single phoneme. e.g. [pʰ] (as in pin) and [p] (as in spin) are allophones of the phoneme /p/. They are written in brackets.

Summary

Summary that I get from this is "English phonology is the sound system (phonology) of the English language, or the study of that system. Phonology is the study of how sounds are organized and used in natural languages. Suprasegmental, also called Prosodic Feature,  in phonetics, is a speech feature such as stress, tone, or word juncture that accompanies or is added over consonants and vowels; these features are not limited to single sounds but often extend over syllables, words, or phrases"
